80s trends are popping up again this year

A wave of 80s trends has gained prominence on the street scene recently. In this article, we take a look at the trends that are visible now and that you can expect to see plenty more of in the coming season.

There are any number of reasons for why we’re turning back the clock to the 80s. One reason is fashion’s natural lifecycle. Looking at the 20-year rule, it becomes instantly clear why 80s clothes are back in our wardrobes this year, and why we should expect other decades to show up as well. Hint: the 20-year rule also applies to 1960s trends.

There’s another explanation though, and we’re sorry to have to bring it up again. But here we are – it’s the pandemic. Most of the 80s trends making a comeback have a clear above-the-waist emphasis. And that just happens to be the part that’s most visible for all you teleworkers. Either way, the 80s are back with a vengeance this summer.  So, let’s sneak a peek at which 80s trends could end up in your wardrobe.

light wash & bleached jeans

On its début, this trend was reserved for the young. Fortunately, that’s no longer the case and is currently trending across the generations. However, while bleached jeans were still edgy and a little uncouth in the 80s, they’re now significantly more elegant. Fibre Mood even has two options for bleached jeans fans. Issue No. 13 includes two fabrics sure to sate your appetite for bleached denim. For a classic bleached look, check out the denim fabric used for the Babette trousers. But if you had something a little thinner in mind for your make, the fabric we used for the Rozan top could be just what you’re looking for.

Power suits, jumpsuits & blazers

In the 1980s, more women started to enter the workforce. Naturally, that meant it was time to design a new office-friendly style. To do it, they drew inspiration from classic and tailored suits. Women started wearing blazers, instantly giving them a professional air, and creating a classic staple of the working woman’s wardrobe. Just remember the outfits from the 1988 film Working Girl, featuring absolutely gorgeous blazers.

Jumpsuits were another popular option, reminiscent of men’s suits with their uniform style. It’s an outfit that you don’t have to work too hard for, and it fantastically flatters your figure. Meanwhile, we’re obviously no longer limited to suit alternatives; suits are for women too! You go girl in that power suit!

Strong shoulders

Strong shoulders are a must on power suits and jumpsuits if you want that 80s touch – shoulder pads, fringe, pleats, and even flames will do the trick. Shoulder details are totally back in. Women who preferred wearing blazers and jumpsuits to work in the 80s finished off their ‘masculine’ look with strong shoulders. While shoulder pads were usually the go-to, you can achieve the same effect by sewing strategic folds into the sleeve. That will ensure that your outfit is a genuine eye-catcher.

The Tulia Jumpsuit gifts us with the best of all these features in an ultra-feminine cut.  The belt emphasises your waist in a flattering way. The sleeves create an illusion of shoulder pads without sacrificing your feminine curves.
