TREND: Mom Jeans

The mom jeans are an item that you've simply got to have in your wardrobe! The advantage to them is that they can be worn all kinds of different ways.

What’s your style? Vintage, old school or trendsetter? With Mother’s Day around the corner, we thought it’d be the perfect time to set our sights on this trendy garment.

Not to worry, you totally don't have to be a ‘mom’ to wear these jeans. The name comes from the popular stereotype of American moms from the early 1990s.

The denim style we all associate today with mom jeans has a brief, but fascinating backstory. In the ‘60s, denim hit the fashion scene with a bang. Among others, stars like James Dean saw the fabric as cool and edgy. Mom jeans actually got their start in the 70s, but it wasn't until the 90s that the model became a serious hit. From that point on, tight was out and baggy jeans were in.

That had something to do, in part, with famous characters and trendsetters, who turned these jeans into typical 80s and 90s-wear. For instance, the cast of Beverly Hills 90210, with Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth, totally rocked their mom jeans. Monica Geller, on Friends, looks fab in every episode in her trendy mom jeans. And don’t forget Winona Ryder and Drew Barrymore, two of the absolute coolest mom jeans queens.

Sadly, once the noughties hit, the Mom jeans lost their lustre. High-waisted trousers got shoved to the back of the closet and low-rise trousers (thanks Britney Spears) became the new cool. The jeans got their name in a hilarious SNL sketch with Tina Fey. It was only a decade or so later that ‘the youth’ started to see the merit of comfy high-waisted, straight leg jeans.

HOW TO STYLE

Today, the mom jeans are totally back, baby! This jeans model fits like a dream when it comes to today's fashion scene. More than anything else, clothing should be comfortable! There's no doubt about it, the mom jeans have knocked those uncomfortable skinny jeans right off their throne.

What’s best about mom jeans is that you can create a dozen different looks with just a single item. Wear them casual with a hip pair of trainers and a baggy sweater or go classy and slip on a white blouse and a pair of high heels. Anyone who enjoys the edgier side of life should pair them with a short leather jacket and a pair of biker boots.

Mom jeans really do work for every figure. With a high waist and trouser legs you can roll up, the jeans look fab even if you’re a little ‘curvier’ or have short legs. So… Mums, time to dust off your jeans from the good old days. Daughters, get to your mum's wardrobe lickety-split. You're sure to find a pair of retro mom jeans there.
