Statement Sleeves: go big or go home!

Showy sleeves may conjure up images of the eighties, but they're the trend of 2020. We noticed this trend pop up from time to time last year, but now? Now it's impossible to ignore. It’s just since this year that sleeves have become truly daring and imaginative. The more out there they are, the better!

A snippet of history

This definitely isn’t the statement sleeve's début on stage. It was in the days of France's Sun King, that extravagant apparel with striking sleeves became a must. It was a way to exude whatever power and wealth you had. Oversized sleeves were, without question, the way to gain prestige.

And in the 1980s, there wasn’t a TV show around that didn't feature statement sleeves. During the Dynastyyears, it was impossible to miss Alexis Carington with her padded shoulders, flamboyant sleeves, and steely gaze. For women, it was often a way of demanding attention on the silver screen.

How to wear

This trend gives us the chance to go wild and have a ball with the countless variations available.

After a long winter in woollen jumpers and dreary colours, we’re pairing this trend with bright colours and cheerful details.

When it comes to sleeves, we think giving it just that extra oomph is the way to go. You can apply the trend to all your favourite outfits because there's nothing you can’t do with it! Shoot for the ultimate summer look with a pair of denim shorts and wide sleeve blouse. Or perhaps you’ve got more casual in mind – think mom jeans and a bomber jacket with puffed sleeves.

Need a statement outfit pronto? Just go for a summery dress with padded shoulders or layered fringe with a pair of kickin’ trainers. Who says trendy has to be complicated?

For the creative spirits among us, there are always pattern hacks for adding statement sleeves to your homemade items. Just think of that extra touch of romance you could add to Issue No. 4’s Mira dress by giving the sleeves more flair. Treat your imagination to the examples below, where some of our Sewistas pattern hacked the sleeves of a few choice Fibre Mood patterns

The Mindy dress is one of this season's most-coveted items. Make the dress in a print or striking colour and add flamboyant puffed sleeves. That’s really all you need to turn your outfit into a bona fide fashion statement.

The Elma dress or top isn't as ‘big’ as the Mindy dress, but there’s no doubt that it belongs on the list of statement sleeve treasures. Its adorable sleeves make it a shoo-in for two trends, retro & romantic! Pair it with some summery sandals or a pair of trainers and you'll be ready to say, ‘Hello world!’ in style.

The Norma Blouse is perfect if you want to give this trend a shot. Pair this blouse with a skirt or a pair of high-waisted jeans. Simple yes, but anything but boring!

The Dora Dress is the dress for you if you want your sleeves to seize the day. Will you go basic with a solid colour or do you feel like jazzing it up a little with a one-of-a-kind print?

Does festive have the right ring to it? The Carole Dress is where it's at! The puffed sleeves give a contemporary look to this classic wrap dress.
